Misconception-about-insomnia.
These are some common misconception-about-insomnia many people have.
All of these are untrue, with the explanation given below each one.
The first misconception-about-insomnia
Everyone needs 8 hours of sleep a night
different people need different amounts of sleep. This amount
is determined biologically.
Some feel rested with five or six hours a night; others need eight to nine.
As long as when you wake up and feel rested, you slept enough.
The second misconceptions about insomnia
people need less sleep as they grow older
As we get older, we don't need less sleep, but we often GET less sleep. That's because our ability to sleep for long periods of time decreases with age. Older people have more fragile sleep and are more easily disturbed by light, noise, and pain.
As adults age, we tend to experience an increase in the lighter stages of sleep and a decrease in the deeper stages. As a result, as we get older, we may wake up more often during the night. They also may have medical conditions that contribute to sleep problems.
Lack of sleep has no serious effects
While short-term insomnia may be of little consequence, more extensive lack of sleep can impair memory and judgment, cause mood disorders, make it difficult to learn new things or perform daily tasks, and reduce the ability of the immune system to prevent illness.
Snoring is a harmless, normal occurrence
Snoring may be a sign of sleep apnea (SA), which occurs in some people when their windpipe collapses and blocking airflow and waking the person. This can happen many times in the night. A lack of oxygen may cause physical problems.
Snoring maybe harmless to the person but may not be harmless to his or her partner.
Insomnia is a disease or an illness
Insomnia is neither a disease nor an illness; instead, it is the symptom of many different kinds of illnesses or conditions such as sleep disorders, acute stress, jet-leg, heart disease etc.
Insomnia is incurable which is untrue.
Generally, insomnia can be cured.
For example, those with insomnia caused by a sudden change in their environment, such as jet leg can have their insomnia cured completely once their body get used to the surroundings.
Chronic insomnia is however harder to treat because it is often a mixture of conditions and causes making identifying the actual problem more challenging. Nevertheless, chronic insomnia can still be cured completely for some. Insomnia caused sorely by illnesses such as heart disease would be gone once the disease is cured. There are of course some instances whereby the insomnia would be nearly impossible to treat based on today's technology. Some examples are insomnia caused by incurable diseases or permanent insomnia.
Another misconception-about-insomnia is
sleeping pills are the only cures.
Sleeping pills are DEFINITELY not the only cures for insomnia.
Sleeping pills can only be used to treat transient insomnia and can not be used to treat chronic insomnia.
In fact, in most cases, the use of sleeping pills might not be beneficial at all. It can be counter productive.
Cognitive therapies are often used in place of sleeping pills with lasting result.
This will sums up the misconception-about-insomnia
