Because it is well-known fact that cognitive behavior therapy can be more effective than medication to end insomnia, because the more relaxed you are, the greater the likelihood to sleep well.
I am no exception. I do understand what you are going through.
In my younger years I had an occasional period of insomnia. As I got older the inability to sleep became more acute.
I had a hard time to fall asleep and when I did, once I woke up during the night, that was it, I couldn’t go back to it again. I was the one who would watch the ceiling and counting sheep, while everybody else was fast asleep.
During the night I often I got up then went back to bed trying to go to sleep which I couldn’t. Then I got up again and back to the bed later. I felt like a yo-yo.
When I woke up I felt tired, not able to concentrate . . . you know the rest
Day time the coffee machine was my best friend.
What a grim life!

You don’t need to listen any lengthy tape or CD or get involved in meditation.
I am not suggesting that not to get involved in meditation. What I am saying is for this purpose you don't need it.
